Traditionally used as a winnowing basket, Gokwe baskets are popular for decorating a wall. They are light and easy to hang, and they have neutral colors beautiful geometric designs. They are created from naturally dyed palm leaves. This Tonga basket is named for where it is woven, the Gokwe district of Zimbabwe. These baskets remarkably smooth and lightweight, and feature beautiful patterns in warm, neutral colors.
The weavers depend on basket income to sustain themselves beyond what food they grow as subsistence farmers. They often use the money earned to pay school fees for their children.
