Bukedo & Raffia Black Star-16W Bowl
At roughly 16 inches across, this is the big statement piece of our bukedo and raffia range, a large decorative bowl with real presence.
In Uganda, weavers build these bowls by wrapping brightly dyed palm raffia around a coil of bukedo, the local name for banana-leaf stalks. The stalks are pulled into thin strips, dried, bundled into coils and wrapped, then stitched row to row, so the weaver constantly extends the coil to keep its shape even. The result is a smooth, sturdy bowl in coordinating colors. Every piece is handmade and fairly traded.
Hang it as a bold centerpiece on a gallery wall, or set it on a table as a generous fruit or decorative bowl. Its size makes it the anchor of a mixed-basket wall grouping.
You will receive one handwoven bukedo and raffia bowl very similar to the one pictured, with minor variations in pattern and dye lot. This is the large size, approximately 16 inches in diameter.
Product Size: Approximately 15.5-16.5 Inches Wide x 3-4 Inches Deep

Weaving Details
Weavers construct these baskets by wrapping colorfully dyed palm raffia around a coil of bukedo, the local term in Uganda for banana leaf stalks. The large banana leaf stalks are pulled apart into long, thin strips, then dried, and then bundled into coils and wrapped with raffia.
Weavers must skillfully extend more bukedo onto the coils as they weave, in order to maintain the consistency of the coil’s size and shape. Each coil is then wrapped or occasionally stitched to the adjacent coil.
