Bukedo & Raffia Monochrome-16 Bowl
Smooth, sturdy and colorful, this 16-inch bukedo and raffia bowl is a versatile piece of Ugandan coil work.
In Uganda, weavers build these bowls by wrapping brightly dyed palm raffia around a coil of bukedo, the local name for banana-leaf stalks. The stalks are dried, bundled into coils and stitched row to row, so the weaver constantly extends the coil to keep the shape even. Every piece is handmade and fairly traded.
Use it as a decorative centerpiece or a soft catchall for a console or coffee table.
You will receive one handwoven bowl very similar to the one pictured, with minor variation in pattern and dye lot. This is the 16-inch size.
Product Size: Approximately 15.5-16.5 Inches Wide x 3-4 Inches Deep
Material: Banana Leaf Stalk, Palm

Weaving Details
Weavers construct these baskets by wrapping colorfully dyed palm raffia around a coil of bukedo, the local term in Uganda for banana leaf stalks. The large banana leaf stalks are pulled apart into long, thin strips, then dried, and then bundled into coils and wrapped with raffia.
Weavers must skillfully extend more bukedo onto the coils as they weave, in order to maintain the consistency of the coil’s size and shape. Each coil is then wrapped or occasionally stitched to the adjacent coil.
