Chivi Sisal Bowl
Thick, sculptural and built to last, the Chivi sisal bowl brings the bold coil work of southern Zimbabwe into your home.
These baskets are woven in the Chivi district, near the Mozambique border, from hand-spun sisal twine wrapped over heavy coils of grass. Some rim coils are over half an inch thick, which gives each bowl its striking starburst and flower patterns and its reassuring weight. Every Chivi sisal bowl is handmade and fairly traded, so your purchase supports the weaver directly.
Use it as a decorative bowl on a coffee table, a catchall by the door, or a sturdy fruit bowl. As a coil basket it holds its shape beautifully and becomes a real conversation piece.
You will receive one handwoven Chivi bowl with natural variation in pattern and color.
Material: Grass, Sisal

Weaving Details
In Southern Zimbabwe a completely different technique of making lightweight string from sisal and then coil weaving baskets exists in the Chivi district. They use thick, heavy coils and primarily natural earthen dyes to weave these study baskets from local grasses and sisal.

The weavers depend on basket income to sustain themselves beyond what food they grow as subsistence farmers. They often use the money earned to pay school fees for their children.
