Small Flared Bowl
Gently flared and full of color, this small handwoven wire bowl is a jewel-box accent for a side table or shelf.
In KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Zulu weavers have carried the intricate designs of their natural-fiber baskets into a brilliant new medium: plastic-coated, lead-free telephone wire. The past and the future fuse together in every coil, turning a utilitarian material into vibrant, functional art. No two are woven quite alike.
The open, flared shape makes it a natural catchall for jewelry or a standout small decorative bowl on its own. Each piece is handmade and fairly traded, so every purchase supports the maker and their craft.
You will receive one handwoven Zulu wire piece in an assorted, one-of-a-kind color pattern. To request specific colors, use the terms from our Zulu Wire Baskets Color Chart and we will fulfill your request subject to availability. Wash gently with warm, soapy water.

Weaving Details
Recycled wire is rarely used anymore because of its scarcity and the fact that using recycled wire produces a basket of lesser quality.
Due to the very high price of copper, which is used in telephone wire, weavers are now using an annealed steel core wire that looks just like telephone wire.
The wire we use is custom manufactured in special colors for the weavers using some recycled and all lead-free materials. The wire is manufactured in South Africa.

Weaving Zulu wire baskets in South Africa
Since wire baskets are woven by many men due to the difficult nature of weaving wire, they are able to stay home on their tribal lands instead of moving to cities to look for work. In the rural groups we work with, the family units are preserved so that the African basket weavers and their families can live more traditional lifestyles.
