- These recycled art bowls come from the far northwest region of Cameroon. They are woven by members of the Tikar tribe in the area around the tiny village of Bikom. It’s a very remote area where people are primarily work on producing cocoa, palm oil, and rubber on a small scale. The Tikar people are famous for their skills in mask carving and also for making masks from clay.
- The interior of the coils on the basket are made from what the weavers call ‘spear grass’ because it is so tall and stiff.
- The coils are skillfully wrapped with thin, colorful strips of strong recycled packing straps, which are also used at the outdoor market to wrap bundles of food in newspaper.
