Making Shona Sculpture in Zimbabwe

The Shona people have a history of carving in stone that dates back about 1,200 years. Most artists work using simple hand tools and very few have electric tools. The stone is carved using ideas derived from the artists’ imaginations, dreams or family carving styles.

My wife LOVES the two baskets I got her for Christmas... too much... She won't use them. She just wants them for decorations. I wanted to replace old baskets with really pretty ones. oh well. :)

I think I have at least one basket in every room of my home, including bathrooms. They are so beautiful, the shapes, the colors and of course how masterfully they are crafted. I also love that you include information about the artists. In fact, I have the photograph of the woman who made my first basket, the Zulu Ilala Palm, hanging beside my desk. She's holding her spectacular creation, smiling with pride. I love that photograph. Thank you for seeking out these talented artists and giving them a marketplace for their baskets.
